TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Gwen Barnes collected a goal and an assist to help lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Drew University at ECAV Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers move to 3-0-2, with all three wins coming in their last four games. Drew drops to 3-4 overall on the season.
The scoring started early and often for the Engineers, as Barnes tallied the opening score in the 10
th minute. Sophomore
Rachel Borra fed a ball toward the right side of the 18 yard box from the midfield, allowing Barnes to run onto it and take a swing. Barnes finished in the lower left corner of the net, giving the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
RPI added their second goal before the end of the first half, collecting it in the 32
nd minute.
Sarah Sedlacek ran up the left wing sideline in a one-on-one battle, and came out with the ball near the corner. She laid a ball off for Isabella O'Clair, who ripped a one-touch shot from the top of the 18 yard box on a line past the goalie to push the RPI lead to 2-0.
The Engineers scored another pair in the second half, scoring the first just two minutes into the second as Barnes found
Bryanna Swinson making a run through the box on a cross from the right wing to give RPI a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal came just minutes later, as
Veronica Martinez de Pinillos found her way around the goalkeeper on a feed from
Melissa Sellards.
Sierra Skelding came up big for the Engineers in the second half, making five saves in net to preserve the shutout victory. Meghan Wampner held down the fort in the first half, making one save. Alexa Krause led Drew with three shots.
RPI returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Ramapo College in their second of three straight games at ECAV Stadium.
