TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team pushed their streak of games without a loss to start the season to six games on Wednesday afternoon, as they defeated Ramapo College by a final score of 6-2. The streak is now currently the longest such streak to start a season since 2002 (eight games), as the Engineers move to 4-0-2 overall.
It took less than five minutes for RPI to get on the board, as
Haley Cole connected on a goal from the top of the 18 on a pass from
Gwen Barnes to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. However, Ramapo tied things up 10 minutes later courtesy of an unassisted goal to tie things up at 1-1.
After Ramapo's game-tying goal, the offense for RPI poured on their highest output of the season, scoring five unanswered goals led by Barnes tapping in a ball toward the net off a header from
Rachel Borra to kick off the run, 2-1.
Four more goals would hit the net before the half, as
Veronica Martinez de Pinillos and
Brooke Miller added goals, along with two from Isabella O'Clair pushed the Engineers lead to 6-1.
Ramapo scored in the 55
th minute to push the lead to 6-2, but the RPI defense held down the fort and used their strong first half to clinch the win.
The Engineers compiled 25 total shots on the game, including 18 in the first half. Barnes led the lineup with three shots on net.
RPI returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 to wrap up a three-game homestand with their opening Liberty League matchup against St. Lawrence. The opening kickoff at ECAV Stadium is slated for 12 p.m.
