Field Hockey Wins Third Straight Game, 2-1

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) came back from an early deficit to defeat Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) 2-1 in a non-league field hockey match at Harkness Field and extend its winning streak to three games. RPI is now 3-5, while the Warriors fall to 2-5-1.

The visiting Warriors broke out on top just 44 seconds into the contest when senior Isabel Sanchez scored on a rebound of her own shot. Classmate Kaylee Drobish carried the ball toward the right edge of the cage, where she got a shot off from close range but it was stopped by RPI goalkeeper Tess Garchinsky. Drobish retained the ball and sent it toward the front of the cage, where Sanchez collected it and took a shot that was also saved. The rebound caromed right back to the forward and she scored.her first of the season.

RPI got the goal back later in the frame when senior Maura Kiernan knocked in a feed from Ria Patel at the 7:55 mark. Patel drove down the right alley and sent the ball toward goal. Kiernan held off a defender to get to the it, deflecting it past goalkeeper Hannah Jalowiec. The goal was the first of the season for Kiernan.

Abby Peterson, a junior, broke the deadlock when she scored in the third. Patel carried the ball down the right side, this time along the sideline, before having it knocked off her stick. Jalowiec kicked it out, but it went right back to Patel, who centered it to Nina Caprio in the middle of the arc. Caprio had her shot blocked but the loose ball bounced off an ECSU defender and towards to goal line. Peterson was there to finish the play for her fourth goal of the season.

Play in the fourth quarter was even and the Engineers earned their third victory in eight days. Garchinsky had three saves for RPI, which held an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners.

Jalowiec made four saves for Eastern Connecticut State.
