Women's Soccer Unbeaten Streak Snapped at Union

Engineers Held Scoreless Against Garnet Chargers

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team was held scoreless through 90 minutes of play Saturday afternoon, as they were handed their first loss of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Union College.

In the 19th minute, Union's Amanda Squeglia set up with the possession at the top corner of the 18-yard box. She fired an airborne pass to Alayna Boileau, stationed at the center of the box, who dropped a one-touch backheel pass to Liz DiCecco, who fired a strike on the run to give Union the lead.

The Garnet Chargers added to their lead five minutes after into the second half, as DiCecco was on the giving end of the Union goal this time. DiCecco gained possession directly across the field from where her goal first originated, at the top corner of the other 18-yard box. DiCecco sent in a cross to the top of the goalie box that took a high bounce over an RPI defender, and Vanessa Jorgensen found herself in the right place at the right time, lifting a header over the  goalie who came across to defend the other side of the net. DiCecco's and Jorgensen's goals were each their first of the season.

Each team put five shots on goal in the second half, and six total in the game. Sierra Skelding made five saves - all in the second half for the Engineers.

RPI returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. when they play host to Bard in Liberty League action at ECAV Stadium.
