TROY, N.Y. - Nationally-ranked Hamilton College got goals from three different student-athletes for a 3-0 lead and the Continentals went on to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a non-league field hockey game at Harkness Field. Hamilton, ranked No. 24 in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, is now 1-0, while RPI drops to 0-3.
The visitors got on the board at 12:50 of the first quarter when Becca Munoz finished a feed from Alana King. Hamilton's Grace Chapis forced a turnover around midfield and carried the ball down the right alley into the offensive zone. She sent a pass to Becky Felker, who slipped the ball to King inside the arc. King chipped a pass to Munoz on her left and the junior swept a bouncing ball low to the blocker side.Â
Sophomore Claire Tratnyek doubled the lead 5:51 into the second quarter when she fired a pass from Sammy Higgins off an RPI defender and into the back of the cage. The play started as a penalty corner with Higgins inserting.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Delaney Grace put the Continentals ahead 3-0 when she tapped a goal mouth feed from Hannah Dillon into the left corner of the cage at 48:09.Â
RPI got on the board under a minute later when junior
Nina Caprio inserted a corner to
Abby Peterson at the top of the arc. Peteron's drive headed toward the left side of the cage before it was deflected by
Rachel Banister and into the goal for the junior's first goal of the season.Â
Tess Garchinsky, a sophomore, finished with 10 saves for the Engineers, while Abby Griffin earned the win on the other end.
