CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team dropped their weekend opener on the road to the Harvard Crimson on Friday night, falling 6-4. With the loss, RPI falls to 7-14-1 overall and 4-7 in ECAC Hockey.
RPI got things going early, as
Austin Heidemann scored just 3:39 into the first period to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
Sutter Muzzatti and
John Evans each earned assists on the play. However, Harvard had a response within two minutes of play to tie it courtesy of Casey Severo, and finished out the period late at the 14:56 mark with a goal from Michael Callow to hold a 2-1 lead after the first.
Once again to kick off the second, the Engineers score quick as
Jake Gagnon scored at the 2:31 mark to tie the game at 2-2. Gagnon was assisted from
Tyler Hotson as the Engineers pulled back even.
From there, Harvard scored four of the next give goals in the game, despite a late second period goal from
John Beaton giving Harvard only a 4-3 lead heading into the third period before the Crimson scored two in the first eight minutes of the final stanza to claim the win.
Aku Koskenvuo earned the win in net for Harvard, making 28 saves while
Jack Watson made 23 in the loss for RPI.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. when they take on Dartmouth on the road.
