TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team bounced back from a loss Friday night in a big way on Saturday afternoon, as the Engineers scored three goals in the opening period and continued to score in a 5-1 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green at the Houston Field House. Captain
Marah Wagner and freshman
Aylah Cioffi each recorded three points on the day, both going for a goal and two assists.
It was a loud first period for the Engineers, as they put up a three-spot on the Big Green in the opening 20 minutes. Wagner wasted no time, scoring just 6:49 in as she picked up a puck in the slot and fired in a goal.
Isabelle Hardy followed suit with a goal off a rebound on a tipped shot by
Morgann Skoda at the 13:28 mark.
RPI's third goal of the frame came off the stick of Andrea Trnkova, as she scored on a one-timer from the left wing circle to make it 3-0 Engineers in the final minute of the opening period. RPI worked the puck around the ice, started by Wagner to Cioffi, who found Trnkova open to her right for the score.
The Engineers added one goal apiece in the second and third periods, as Cioffi got into the goal column on a bouncing puck she sent toward the net on the backhand that squeaked by Dartmouth goaltender Hann Humphreys to make it 4-0.
Junior
Ellie Kaiser scored the fifth and final goal to cap an offensive outburst for the Engineers just over a minute into the third period to make it 5-0 RPI. Wagner skated behind the net, drawing two defenders with her, and found Kaiser wide open on the side of the net. Kaiser then lifted a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net for the score.
Minutes later, Dartmouth scored their lone goal of the game on a shot from Tiffany Hill, scoring on a wrist shot from the left wing circle. Earning assists on the play were Lauren Messier and Shae Messner.
Goaltender
Amanda Rampado finished the game with 22 saves in the victory for the Engineers, while Humphreys finished with 31 saves for the Big Green in the loss.
RPI returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. when the Engineers take on Union at MVP Arena in downtown Albany for the next installment of the Mayor's Cup.
