Men’s Hockey Battles Into Overtime With Niagara

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team played into overtime for the second straight night against Niagara, however the Purple Eagles would net the game-winner in the opening moments of OT to give the visitors the win.

Shane Ott provided Niagara with the winning score with 36 seconds gone in the extra session. Ott's strike, of a feed from Glebs Prohorenkovs, was initially waved off due to goaltender interference, but that call was eventually overturned and the goal was ruled good after a lengthy review.

RPI received goals from John Beaton, Tyler Hotson, Rainers Rullers, and Arvils Bergmanis in the setback.

The Engineers erased two separate two-goal deficits to force overtime, as the Purple Eagles led 2-0 in the first period and a 3-1 in the third.

After Niagara deposited two goals in the first six minutes of the game, Beaton was able to get RPI on the board midway through the first period with help from Will Gilson and Felix Caron.

Niagara would own two of the next three goals, with Hotson's second-period score sandwiching a pair of Purple Eagles in the stanza.

The early stages of the third period saw Rullers find the back of the net to cut the Niagara margin to one. Bergmanis forced the overtime with his first goal of the season nine minutes later.

The Engineers will look ahead to next Friday's Blackout matchup versus Union. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Houston Field House.
