ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team opened Liberty League play with a 14-7 setback at undefeated Rochester this afternoon.
Kevin Hughes had the lone touchdown of the day for RPI, as his five-yard run capped a 13-play, 70-yard scoring drive in the third quarter.
Ryan Rose tossed two touchdowns passes in the first half to give Rochester a 14-0 lead after the break.Â
After the Hughes score cut the deficit to seven, the Engineers had a pair of possessions that ended in Rochester territory in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Looking for the potential tying score, RPI had driven inside the Rochester red zone before an unsuccessful 4th-and-6 attempt with five minutes remaining.Â
After the RPI defense forced the Yellow Jackets to punt the ball away with under three minutes remaining, the Engineers would manage to advance the ball past midfield before
Jake Kazanowsky was intercepted with 30 seconds remaining.
Kazanowsky finished 24-of-30 for 204 yards.
Sean Kelly topped the RPI offense with seven receptions for 62 yards.
Shane Allison caught a season-high five passes and
Hayden Faraday added four catches as well.
Rochester registered 147 rushing yards and forced three turnovers to earn its fifth consecutive victory to start the fall.
Looking ahead, the Engineers will head home to welcome St. Lawrence to ECAV Stadium for a 12:00 pm kickoff next Saturday.
