AMHERST, Mass.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team defeated nationally-ranked University of Massachusetts-Amherst 2-1 in exhibition play today.
John Beaton scored the game-winner for the Engineers with 46 seconds remaining in the extra session to give RPI the victory over the No. 14 ranked Minutemen.
After UMass netted a goal midway through the first, the Engineers equalized on a power play with Max Smolinski setting up Jakob Lee for the score with 90 ticks left on the period.
The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation to force OT, setting up the Beaton game-winner.
Jack Watson played the first 40 minutes in net for RPI before being relieved by Noah Giesbrecht. Watson posted 11 saves, while Giesbrecht turned away 14 attempts.
The Engineers will look ahead to Friday's regular season-opener at Canisius, with puck drop schedule for 7:00 pm in Buffalo, N.Y.
