RPI Uses Big First Half to Defeat United States Coast Guard Academy

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy 53-50 today in ECAV Arena.

Tyler Hormazabal paced the Engineers with 10 points, while Amanda Gallagher and Siena Smith provided nine and seven points, respectively. Smith and Gallagher each pulled down a team-high seven rebounds apiece as well.

Callie Flynn added six points, while Emilia Rojik, Sophie Costello, and Sydney Blaney logged five points each to aid the RPI offense.

After the Coast Guard Academy owned the first two points of the game, the Engineers scored the next 17 points to establish a big lead early.

The Engineers took a 30-14 advantage into halftime, and were ahead by as much as 20 in the third quarter thanks to a defensive effort that allowed only five made field goals in the 45 shot attempts by the Cadets.

RPI finished with 11 steals in the win, marking the third consecutive game in which the Engineers have recorded double-digit steals.

Next up, RPI will take its 3-0 record on the road to challenge Cobleskill at 12:00 pm on Sunday.
