Engineers Use Early Offense and Late Defense to Defeat Merrimack 3-2

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team began a 10-game homestand with a 3-2 victory against Merrimack tonight in Houston Field House.

Kyley Toye tallied one goal and one assist to highlight the RPI attack. The Engineers also received goals from Georgia Bailey and Gracyn Mackay in the win.

RPI did all its scoring in the first 30 minutes of the game before locking in defensively down the stretch.

Bailey and Mackay each recorded first period strikes for the Engineers, with Bailey's unassisted tally at 5:38 starting the opening period scoring.

After the Warriors tied things at 1-1 three minutes after Bailey's goal, RPI would manage to take a 2-1 advantage at the first intermission thanks to Mackay's first career collegiate goal with under four minutes left in the stanza.

Toye improved the margin to 3-1 midway through the second after finishing off a scoring sequence that featured assists from Sophie Helgeson and Meg Hildner. Helgeson finished with two assists on the night, as she also worked with Toye to help manufacture Mackay's goal.

Merrimack got a score back with 23 seconds remaining in the second, however RPI goaltender Reese Keating would register 12 of her 25 saves across the final period, including seven in the final nine minutes, to guide the Engineers to the one-goal triumph.

The two sides will wrap the weekend series tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the Field House.
