TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team finished its perfect ECAC weekend with a 3-1 victory versus #14 Yale this afternoon in Houston Field House.
After Yale pocketed a short-handed goal at 7:28 in the first period, the Engineers rolled off the final three goals of the day to earn the win against the nationally-ranked visitors.
Nyah Phillip gave RPI its first goal with three minutes left in the first, as she worked with
Georgia Bailey to finish a two-on-one break.
Sophia Jones was also credited with an assist on the play, as started the possession with a great pass up ice to Bailey, who beat her defender to earn free space in the middle of the attacking zone before leaving it off for Phillip.
The Engineers would then score twice in the opening minutes of the second period to quickly build a multi-goal advantage.
Taryn Rathwell used help from
Aylah Cioffi and Bailey to tally her first collegiate goal before
Sabrina Beaudoin snuck one home 31 seconds later.
Audrey McCutcheon and
Nina Christof recorded assists on the score from Beaudoin, who deflected in a pass from McCutcheon along the red line.
RPI goaltender
Reese Keating stopped 39-of-40 Bulldog shots, marking the second-most saves she has produced this season. Keating was especially clutch in a third period that featured 18 shots on goal from Yale.
The Engineers will head into the holiday break with an overall record of 11-7-2, which is the first time since the 2008-09 season that the Engineers have won 11 of their first 19 games. RPI's next contest will be at home against Princeton on Friday, January 3.
