Women’s Hockey Topped by #9 Quinnipiac

TROY, N.Y. – Entering the third period tied 1-1, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team was outscored 3-1 in the final 20 minutes of play as they were defeated by the No. 9 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats by a final score of 4-2 at the Houston Field House Friday night.

Quinnipiac opened the scoring early in the first period, as Jess Schryver got the Bobcats on the board with a score. Schryver charged up the left side of the ice, scoring on a one-timer to give Quinnipiac the early 1-0 lead. Nina Steingauf and Maddy Samoskevich each had assists on the play.

However in the second period, the Engineers fought back and tied the score thanks to a goal from Maddy Papineau. After a shot from Isabelle Hardy that was saved, the puck bounced back out where Papineau corralled the puck, and finished on her back hand to make it 1-1. Nyah Philip also earned an assist on the play, as the score stood 1-1 into the third period.

The Bobcats scored back-to-back goals at the 12:15 and 14:27 marks of the third period to go up 3-1. Alexa Haskin and Maya Labad each scored, with Labad's coming as the game-winning goal for Quinnipiac.

The Engineers didn't go without a fight, as Hardy was able to collect a goal with the net empty bringing RPI back to within a goal at 3-2 with just over 90 seconds to play.

But Quinnipiac put the game away with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, as Labad added her second goal of the night via the empty net, giving the Bobcats a 4-2 victory.

Logan Angers made 24 saves in net for Quinnipiac, while Amanda Rampado was a highlight with 39 saves.

RPI returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Princeton at the Houston Field House on Senior Day.
