TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team opened up their game on Saturday with 11 straight scores and had 14 goals at halftime before keeping their lead throughout the second half in a 18-10 victory over the Vassar College Brewers. The win moves the No. 7 nationally-ranked Engineers to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
Neither team scored for nearly 12 minutes to open up the game before RPI jumped on the board with just over three minutes to play in the opening quarter. A goal from
Zach Swanson got the ball rolling to the tune of 11 straight goals, with Swanson also scoring the book-ender to make it 11-0 with 8:31 to play in the second quarter.Â
After Vassar scored one with 6:11 to play in the first half, RPI ended it with another small 3-0 spurt to take a 14-1 lead at the midway point.
The Engineers and Brewers went toe-to-toe in the second half, as Vassar used three different runs - outscoring RPI 9-4 in the second half to climb back within single-digits. However, the RPI lead proved too much for the Brewers as the Engineers grabbed the win.
Sean Smith and
Luke Murphy each recorded five points apiece, with Murphy going for a team-high four goals and one assist, while Smith turned in a hat trick and two assists. Swanson also ended up with a four-goal showing, with goalkeeper
Joseph Perry earning another victory in the cage.
RPI returns to action this Wednesday, March 20 when they play host to Williams at ECAV Stadium at 5 p.m.
