TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team used a three-run bottom of the fifth inning to solidify a 5-2 victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark before the game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to weather. The Engineers have now won four in a row heading into their opening Liberty League weekend.
Joey Saia provided the lone two-hit game for the Engineers, while
Aidan Hicks had the teams lone extra-base hit - an RBI double to right field. Pitcher Matt Nelson carried the load on the mound, pitching all six innings surrendering just one hit and two runs. He walked three and struck out three.
The Trailblazers were the first on the board in the top of the second inning, hanging a pair of runs on Nelson thanks to an RBI groundout from Ty Mazzeo and an RBI single from Billy Walsh. However, the Engineers responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs of their own - highlighted by the Hicks double to tie the gamer at 2-2.
Both sides played scoreless ball until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Engineers hopped out front.
Walker Abdallah had the go-ahead knock, an RBI single to right field to score Hicks to make it 3-2 RPI. Abdallah ended up scoring on a balk before a sacrifice fly from
Julian Scarpa concluded the scoring for the Engineers.
Nelson shut down the Trailblazers in the top of the sixth inning as the skies opened with snow and wind, and the game was called from that point.
RPI returns to action this weekend on Friday at 4 p.m. when they head to Vassar for one game before taking on the Brewers in a doubleheader in Troy on Saturday.
