TROY, N.Y. - After a win on Friday, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team used a win in the front end of a doubleheader on Monday to claim a series win over the Vassar Brewers, taking Game 1 by a final score of 3-1 before falling 7-3 in the series finale. The loss in Game 2 snapped a six-game winning streak for RPI.
Game 1
The runs came early and often, as RPI wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with runs in the bottom of the first inning. A triple off the bat of
Kameron Levesque that found the right field corner scored
Walker Abdallah to make it 1-0 Engineers just three batters into the inning. Levesque then came in to score after an RBI single by Martin Martinchev to give RPI a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers added a run in the bottom of the third, as Levesque struck again - this time on the base path. With runners on first and third, Levesque took off for second in a steal attempt, and got caught in a run down to allow
Jon Primerano to score from third to make it 3-0 RPI.
RPI starting pitcher
Alex Vallee surrendered just one run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, pitching 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts to lead the way for RPI in the win.
Game 2
RPI starting pitcher
Rylan Wade and Vassar starter Addison Lee went toe-to-toe for the first four innings, each putting up four scoreless innings to begin the game. Vassar broke through in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a pair highlighted by an RBI double from Birch Herring-Jackson to maker it 2-0 Brewers.
The sixth and seventh innings saw the Brewers pull away, led by a two-run home run in the sixth inning from Jensen Bergman as Vassar took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Engineers broke through onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Levesque drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run before sophomore
Matt Chotiner collected an RBI single to score two more runs just a few batters later to make it a 7-3 game. However, the Engineers left runners on base and could not score in the ninth as Vassar held on for the win.
RPI returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 at 3:30 PM in a single non-conference game at Robison Field against Middlebury.
