TROY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball swept a doubleheader versus Russell Sage College this afternoon to earn victories in the first two games played on the newly renovated Doris Robison Field. The Engineers, who were ranked #19 in the most recent NFCA national rankings, claimed game one 7-1 before earning a 9-1 five-inning win in the finale.
Four different Engineers logged two hits apiece in the opener, as the trio of
Erin Askins,
Evann McDowell, and
Gabby Comeau each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored at the top of the RPI lineup.
Catherine Worthington was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored. She added an RBI as well.
RPI opened the scoring early in the game one, as Comeau singled home McDowell in the bottom of the first to go ahead 1-0. The Engineers would expand their lead with two more runs in the fourth, one of which came on an RBI single from Worthington.
A two-run home run by
Alex Ledger moved the RPI margin to 5-0 before Askins and McDowell each provided run-scoring doubles in the sixth.
Brooke Sroczinski scatted five hits across 6.0 innings to earn the win in the circle for the Engineers in game one. Sroczinski struck out 10 batters.
The afternoon's second game would see Worthington continue her hot day at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort. Askins,
Sydney Speanburg, and
Maddy Brooks also tallied multi-hit performances in the game two win.
RPI plated eight runs in the first three innings, with a six-spot in the third frame keying the triumph. The Engineers received RBI from six different players in the finale, including a team-high three runs driven in by Brooks.
McDowell, Worthington,
Liv Vizzini,
Addison Shaffer, and
Ryleigh Falvey were each credited with one RBI as well for the Engineers in game two.
The Engineers will next look ahead to a Thursday doubleheader at Vermont State University Castleton, with first pitch set for 3:00 pm in Castleton, VT.
