TROY, NY- The Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team shut out Vermont State University Castleton twice this afternoon at Doris Robison Field, with the Engineers earning a doubleheader sweep behind final scores of 5-0 and 3-0.
Erin Askins went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Caroline Peel crossed home plate twice to lead the Engineers lineup in game one.
Callista Adorno scored a run and had one RBI and the outfield duo of
Mikayla O'Neill and
Ryleigh Falvey drove in one run each as well.
Brooke Sroczinski was stellar again in the circle, as she logged eight strikeouts in her 7.0 innings. Sroczinski only allowed one hit in the opener, which came against the second batter she faced in the top of the first inning.
Two big hits defined the Engineer's 3-0 victory in game two.
Alex Ledger gave RPI a 1-0 advantage with an RBI double in the first inning, and
Emma Newberry provided a pinch hit two-run double to help break things open in the bottom of the fifth.
Ledger reached base in all three trips to the plate in the second game of the day, as she finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Askins, Adorno, and
Maddy Brooks accounted for the Engineer's runs in the finale.
RPI starting pitcher
Alexis Cooke scattered two base runners in 5.1 innings before
Ava Markert closed out the final 1.2 frames for the save.
The unbeaten Engineers next take the field for a Saturday doubleheader at Oneonta. First pitch of the twin bill is set for 1:00 pm.
