Engineers Stung Late by Union

TROY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team was edged tonight by Liberty League rival Union. The Garnet Chargers converted the game-winning goal with 11.7 seconds remaining to steal a 9-8 victory at ECAV Stadium.

The Engineers received a game-high four goals from Meghan Shay in the setback. Ella Graff netted two scores and Lauren DeLeo and Audrey Silverman each tallied solo strikes.

Silverman, Shay, and Graff found the back of the net in a first period that ended with RPI ahead 3-2.

Shay struck for the only score in the second period to extend the Engineer lead to 4-2 at halftime.

Shay registered two of the three RPI goals in the third period, with DeLeo adding a free-position goal as well in the frame.

Union trailed by as much as four in the second half, however a Garnet Charger goal with 2:08 left in the third sparked a 5-1 Union rally that culminated with the game-tying score with 1:33 remaining.

RPI won the ensuing draw control, but the Engineers possession ended with an offensive whistle, setting up the Union game-winner by Anna Smith in the final seconds.

Greta Maurer finished with four points on one goal and three assists, while Gillian Joseph had three goals in the win for Union.

Looking forward, the Engineers next host Clarkson on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, with the action set to begin at 3:30 pm.
