TROY, N.Y. - The No. 4 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team met up with No. 5 St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at ECAV Stadium in the Liberty League regular season finale. The Saints scored 12 first half goals, as they defeated the Engineers by a final score of 15-10. With the loss, RPI now becomes the No. 3 seed in the 2024 Liberty League Championship, as they will head north to Canton to take on the No. 2 seeded Saints in a rematch of the season finale.
St. Lawrence came out strong, gaining an early 3-0 lead and scoring six of the first seven goals of the game to open a 6-1 with 10:41 to play in the second quarter.
Zach Swanson scored two of the Engineers' four first half goals, as his last goal marked the start of a key Saints 5-0 run before
Erik Ojert's goal with 1:24 to play in the second quarter stopped it. At the midway point, St. Lawrence collected a 12-4 lead.
Despite a strong second half, the Engineers battled the first half deficit the whole way. They held the Saints off the board throughout the third quarter, putting up four straight to cut the lead to 12-8 after
Cooper Manzi scored with a man-up and 9:04 remaining in the game. However, St. Lawrence outscored RPI 3-2 over the final nine minutes to hang on for the win.
Judge Murphy led the way for the Saints, putting up a seven-point performance with six goals and an assist. Goaltender Michael Marinello made 13 saves in the win.
Swanson added an assist to his statline for a team-leading three points, while five other Engineers collected at least two points. Goalkeeper
Joseph Perry made nine saves in just his second loss of the season.
RPI returns to action next Friday, May 3 when they take on St. Lawrence in Canton in the Liberty League Semifinals. Time for the game is to be determined.
