TROY, N.Y- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team stumbled in its first game of day two of the Liberty League Softball Championships, however the Engineers were able to rebound and defeat Ithaca 1-0 in the final contest of the afternoon to punch their ticket into Saturday's title matchup.
Evann McDowell provided the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to help RPI secure it's spot in Saturday's final.
With the two squads deadlocked in a scoreless pitchers dual, McDowell supplied the game's only run with a two-out triple down the right-field line that plated
Sydney Speanburg. Speanburg had led off the inning with a single and later stole a base to set up the go-ahead score for RPI.
Brooke Sroczinski struck out 12 Yellowjackets over 7.0 innings to earn the win in the circle. She has punched 10 or more batters in three of her last four starts.
RPI will match up with Rochester in the championship round tomorrow, setting the stage for a rematch of the today's opening tilt which saw the Yellowjackets earn a 10-1 victory over RPI. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm tomorrow, with a 1:30 pm meeting to follow should the Engineers prevail over Rochester in the first game.
