BRUNSWICK, ME - The No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team fell just short of victory in their first match of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon, as the Engineers were defeated by a final score of 5-3. The win ends the season for RPI, finishing with a 17-2 overall dual match record.
RPI began the match grabbing all three points in doubles play, as
Aiden Drover-Mattinen and
Andy Zhu wrapped up at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory to clinch the third point. In No. 2 doubles,
Tsubi Okada and
Joel McCandless came out with an 8-1 win to start before
Bryce Burnham and
Jonathan McMillan won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles in the middle.
Despite taking all three courts in doubles play, the Engineers fell behind early in singles play. Okada was the lone RPI player that won in the first set, while
Tasmay Shah took the second set of his match to keep RPI's chances alive late. Trailing 4-3 in the match, RPI fell at No. 6 singles as Williams took the match 5-3.
Drover-Mattinen and Zhu will both continue the season for the Engineers, as the duo was selected and will participate in the NCAA Individual Championship on May 26-28 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The pair will compete in the doubles tournament, while Drover-Mattinen will also compete in the singles tournament.Â
