Engineers Fight Union Down to Final Seconds of Capital District Mayor’s Cup

ALBANY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team nearly fought back from a three-goal deficit before the final horn sounded on a 3-2 triumph for Union in the annual Capital District Mayor's Cup at MVP Arena.

The Engineers were forced to play from behind early after the Garnet Chargers pocketed two goals in the first period and another midway through the second.

Aylah Cioffi got RPI started at 16:05 in the second period, as she used assists from Ellie Kaiser and Natalie Tulichinksy to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Andrea Trnkova scored next for the Engineers halve the margin down to a single goal with seven minutes remaining.

The Engineers controlled much of the action following the Trnkova score, however Union received a pair of saves from Sophie Matsoukas and three blocked attempts from the defensive unit to withstand the final RPI rally.

Audrey McCutcheon and Meg Hildner entered the score sheet as well for RPI with assists on Trnkova's goal.

The Engineers will next look forward to a trip to New Haven, Conn. on Friday night to face Yale.
