TROY, NY.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team battled back from a three-goal deficit before suffering a 6-5 overtime loss to Brown tonight in Houston Field House.
The Engineers trailed 5-2 early in the third before ripping off three consecutive goals to knot the score with 10 minutes left in regulation. Brown would put four shots on goal in the OT before Brian Nicholas provided the game-winning tally with 53 seconds left.
Nicholas finished with a hat trick for the visitors, as his night began with the opening score at 7:38 in the first. The Engineers would answer quickly though, with Jakob Lee punching one home five minutes later to equal things at 1-1.
Brown took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after finding the back of the net with 65 seconds remaining, but the advantage would not last long into the second as Jake Gagnon struck off of a Rainers Rullers face-off win with 1:15 elapsed in the frame.
Tied once more, the Bears would sprint ahead again with three goals in the final 14 minutes of the second, including a blow with 11 seconds left before the end of the period.
Will Gilson helped the Engineers get one back at 1:16 in the third, setting the tone for a frantic stanza that later saw RPI score a pair of goals 26 seconds apart to pull level. Arvils Bergmanis' power-play strike started the Engineer blitz before Jack Brackett finished a breakaway less than a minute later.
RPI continued to pressure the Bears net after the tying goal, but the Engineers drilled a post and were stonewalled five times by Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher.
Elliott McDermott contributed two assists and Max Smolinski, Felix Caron, John Beaton, Tyler Hotson, and Jagger Tapper matched Rullers with one helper each on the night. Lee supplemented his first-period goal with an assist as well. McDermott also tallied a game-high three blocks.
Looking forward, the Engineers will be back in Houston Field House tomorrow for the 47th annual Big Red Freakout, which features a 7:00 pm puck drop against Yale.
