Engineers Take Down Yale 5-2 in 47th Big Red Freakout

TROY, NY.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team defeated Yale 5-2 tonight in the 47th Big Red Freakout in Houston Field House. The Engineers fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 before netting the final four goals to earn the home victory in front of more than 4,500 fans.

Jake Gagnon, Max Smolinski, Felix Caron, Dovar Tinling, and Jakob Lee each contributed goals in the RPI victory.

Trailing by one in the first period, Gagnon electrified the Houston Field House crowd with the Engineers first goal with 29 ticks remaining in the period.

Yale edged ahead 2-1 halfway through the second, however the Engineers deposited two goals in the last four minutes of the stanza, beginning with Smolinski at 16:37 and then Caron with three seconds left until the frame ended.

Tinling and Lee took advantage of the Bulldogs empty net late in the third to wrap the Engineer scoring.

Noah Giesbrecht finished with 33 saves in between the pipes for the Engineers, a performance that including 26 stops on Yale's last 27 attempts.

Tyler Hotson was an offensive catalyst with two assists, while Will Gilson, Jack Brackett, Jagger Tapper, Tinling, and Giesbrecht each assisted on a goal as well. Gilson also lead the Engineers with three blocked shots.

RPI will next hit the road for respective matchups at Cornell and Colgate on Friday and Saturday.
