Five Second Half Goals Give RPI Liberty League Win at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. — Powered by a second-half offensive explosion, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team surged past St. Lawrence University, 6-1, in Liberty League action this afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.

After the teams traded early goals in the first quarter, RPI broke the game open with five unanswered scores, including three in a dominant third quarter.

St. Lawrence opened the scoring at 10:35 of the first quarter on a strike from Lily Gubbins, but the Engineers wasted no time responding. Just over two minutes later, Brown found the back of the cage off a feed from Ria Patel, knotting the game at 1-1 after one quarter.

After a scoreless second frame, Brown notched her second tally at the 34:23 mark off a penalty corner, assisted by Ella Pasquarelli, to give RPI its first lead of the day. Less than four minutes later, Kennedy Campbell converted on a corner to push the lead to 3-1. The Engineers kept the pressure on, and Lindsay Dunbar added an unassisted goal in the 44th minute to close the quarter with a three-goal advantage.

RPI continued its offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, as Katie Galgay added her fourth goal of the season on another Pasquarelli assist at 46:07, and Brown capped off her stellar afternoon by completing the hat trick in the 53rd minute to seal the 6-1 win. Brown now leads all Liberty League players with 13 goals on the season.

RPI outshot the Saints 11-9 and generated a 13-10 advantage in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Tess Garchinsky made eight saves in the win, with five coming during a flurry of second-quarter pressure from the hosts. Brown led all players with four total points, while Pasquarelli finished with a pair of assists.

The Engineers will stay on the road to face William Smith on Friday at 4:00 pm.
