TROY, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Ithaca today in ECAV Stadium.
The Engineers opened the scoring in just the third minute of action when defender
Matt Schlotterbeck buried a rebound opportunity to give RPI the early 1-0 lead. The play started off a corner kick followed initial attempt by
Kedy Nana, whose shot was blocked, however Schlotterbeck capitalized on the loose ball to notch his first tally of the season.
Ithaca responded with pressure throughout the opening half, generating four corners and nine total shots, but RPI goalkeeper
Antonio Spina came up big with six first-half saves to keep the visitors off the board. The Bombers eventually found the equalizer in the 55th minute when Colin Adams converted a chance to knot the game at 1-1.
RPI answered back with what proved to be the game-winner in the 78th minute. Nana, who had been active throughout the match, finished off a loose ball in the middle of the Ithaca box to reclaim the lead for the Engineers with 12 minutes to play.
Both teams continued to trade possessions in the final stretch, but Spina and the RPI defense held firm. Spina totaled seven saves in the match.
The Engineers will hit the road for their next two contests, beginning with a 6:00 pm matchup at Skidmore on Wednesday evening.
