SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — A second-half goal proved decisive this evening, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Skidmore College in Liberty League play at Wachenheim Field.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams generate chances, Skidmore broke through in the 56th minute when Tobias Catizone delivered the game's lone goal at 55:19. The Thoroughbreds managed 14 total shots in the match, putting four on goal, while RPI countered with 11 shots, including three on target.
Sam Shmukler led the Engineers offensively, registering a game-high seven shots, one of which forced a save.
Joshua Jarden added three shots with one on frame, and
Landon Bradley contributed RPI's other shot on goal.
Antonio Spina went the full 90 minutes in goal for RPI, making three saves to keep the Engineers in the match. The visitors nearly pulled even late in the second half, earning four of their five corner kicks after halftime, but were unable to find the equalizer.
RPI returns to action this weekend as it continues Liberty League competition with a 2:00 pm meeting at Clarkson on Saturday.
