POTSDAM, N.Y. — A pair of goals less than two minutes apart proved to be the difference as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Clarkson University today at Hantz Turf Field.
After a tightly contested first half that ended scoreless, the Engineers generated a handful of chances in the second, including a shot on goal by Matt Schlotterbeck in the 60th minute that was turned aside by Clarkson goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup. Despite outshooting the hosts 4-2 over a stretch in the second frame and earning four second-half corner kicks, RPI was unable to break through offensively.
Clarkson opened the scoring in the 75th minute when Jay Jezioro found the back of the net off a free-kick delivery from Zach Ruthfield. Just 76 seconds later, the Golden Knights doubled their advantage through Josh Baraka, who finished headed home a rebound on a corner kick sequence.
The Engineers will begin a three-game home stand on Tuesday night versus MCLA. Kickoff for the non-conference meeting is set for 7:00 pm in ECAV Stadium.
