Men’s Soccer Earns 3-1 Home Win Over MCLA Behind Second-Half Surge

TROY, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team used a dominant second-half performance to earn a 3-1 non-league victory over MCLA on tonight in ECAV Stadium.

After falling behind in the 16th minute on a goal from MCLA's Jacob Malburg, the Engineers equalized just before halftime and controlled play the rest of the way. RPI's Ben Tymeson leveled the score in the 44th minute, finishing a feed from Joshua Jarden for his second goal of the season.

RPI kept their momentum rolling in the second half, owning 17 of the 18 shot shots after the break. Olivier Szorc netted the go-ahead tally in the 65th minute with an assist from Gavin Jell, and then returned the favor with an assist on a free kick service to Noah Gregory for an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.

The Engineers had a season-high 26 shots, with their 15 attempts on goal marking the most in game this season as well. Szorc led all players with seven shots (six on target), while Tymeson and Jarden combined for 10 shots and two assists. RPI also had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Antonio Spina recorded a pair of saves to earn the victory. MCLA netminder Michael Harris kept the game close with 11 saves, including six in the second half.

RPI returns to Liberty League play to face St. Lawrence at home on Saturday afternoon.
