TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team earned a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Clarkson University this afternoon at ECAV Stadium. After trailing at halftime, the Engineers surged in the second half with a pair of goals, including the game-winner from
Genevieve Ricci with five minutes to play, to secure the Liberty League win.
Clarkson had opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Brooke Everest converted off a pair of passes from Paige Ford and Gabrielle Cyganik. The Golden Knights held the 1-0 advantage into the break despite a relatively balanced first half, with Clarkson taking five shots to RPI's four.
The Engineers responded in the 53rd minute, when
Maddy Kaminski deposited the equalizer following a setup from
Isabelle Gelzhiser. RPI kept the pressure on, and after a pair of corner kicks and multiple shots in the ensuing minutes, the breakthrough came in the 86th minute. Ricci stepped up and delivered the game-winner to put RPI ahead 2-1.
Goalkeeper
Audrey Montero anchored the RPI defense with four saves, including two in the final five minutes as Clarkson pushed for a tying goal. The Engineers withstood a flurry of late corner kicks and shots from the Golden Knights to preserve the conference win.
RPI next travel to Vassar for a 3:30 pm meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
