Field Hockey Suffers Non-Conference Defeat at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team fell to New Paltz by a 2-0 score this afternoon.

After a scoreless first quarter in which each team registered five shots, the host Hawks broke through with two goals in the second period. Maya Okeefe netted the opener four minutes into the second on a feed from Rachel Tama. Just under nine minutes later, Tama doubled the New Paltz lead.

RPI generated nine total shots in the contest, including seven on goal, but was unable to break through against Hawks goalkeeper Gail Comiskey, who made six saves in the shutout. Grace Johnson and Katie Galgay each recorded a team-high two shot attempts, while Tess Garchinsky finished with eight saves in net and helped the Engineers withstand seven New Paltz penalty corners.

The Engineers' best scoring chances came in the first and third quarters, including a penalty corner early in the third that led to a shot from Ella Pasquarelli, which was saved. RPI also received defensive saves from both Johnson and Julie Thomas to deny New Paltz further scoring opportunities.

RPI returns to Harkness Field for an 11:00 am Liberty League tilt with Skidmore on Saturday.
