Football Registers Record-Setting Win at Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team put together a dominant all-around performance in a 69–14 victory over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon at St. Francis High School. The 69 points mark the most ever scored by RPI in a road game and tied for the second-highest total in program history.

RPI wasted no time finding the end zone, as Thomas Mulvaney returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. After Hilbert briefly evened the score with a long touchdown run, the Engineers erupted for 62 unanswered points.

Quarterback Anthony DeMatteo threw four touchdown passes in the first half, connecting with Nate Ehui, Josh Young, and Chris Ahle twice. Kayden White added rushing scores from four and one yards out to finish with log a seventh straight game with multiple rushing touchdowns.

The Engineers added to their total in the second half as Maric converted field goals of 35 and 31 yards, Paisley Nickelson hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Frankie Garbolino, and Jake Henehan capped the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

DeMatteo completed 13 of 20 passes for 182 yards and four touchdowns, while Garbolino went a perfect 4-for-4 for 47 yards and a score. Ahle led all receivers with 45 yards and two touchdowns on three catches, Young added a 52-yard touchdown reception, and Ehui and Nickelson each contributed long scores through the air. White was again effective on the ground, rushing for 61 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries, while Henehan added 50 yards and a score.

RPI's defense stifled the Hilbert offense, forcing two fumbles that led directly to scores. Matt Krauza recovered one fumble at the one-yard line to set up White's second touchdown, and Cylan Terrelonge added another recovery following a strip by Cortez Garrett. The Engineers finished with eight tackles for loss and one sack, led by Krauza's three stops behind the line.

Special teams were again a factor, with Mulvaney's opening kickoff return setting the tone and Gage Swanger averaging 15 yards per punt return. Maric went 9-for-9 on extra points and 2-for-2 on field goals, while Hayden Gray averaged over 57 yards per kickoff with one touchback.

RPI piled up 403 total yards of offense, averaging nearly eight yards per play, and scored on all six of its red-zone opportunities.

The Engineers, who received votes in the most recent NFCA national coaches poll, will  begin preparations for a 12:00 pm showdown at St. Lawrence next Saturday.
