CANTON, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team was narrowly defeated 1-0 by St. Lawrence University this afternoon in Liberty League play at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The decisive moment came just 54 seconds into the second half when Meredith Donahue scored the game's only goal for the Saints, assisted by Lily Pleau. Donahue led all players with eight total shots, while the host team compiled a 28-10 advantage in attempts and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Despite the offensive pressure from the Saints, RPI goalkeeper
Audrey Montero made six saves on the day, with several key stops in each half to keep the Engineers within striking distance. St. Lawrence's Reagan Murphy recorded five saves in the shutout.
RPI registered five shots on target, including efforts from
Genevieve Ricci,
Delaney McMorris,
Sophia Byron,
Rachel Borra, and
Emma Rosenberg. Ricci's shot in the 12th minute and Rosenberg's attempt in the 89th minute were among RPI's best chances, but both were turned away by Murphy.
The Engineers' defense, anchored by
Greta Heldman,
Keleigh Nihart, and
Sophia Byron, endured a relentless first-half barrage in which St. Lawrence posted 16 shots.
RPI will next welcome Bard coming to Troy for a 4:00 pm meeting on Wednesday.
