Men's Soccer Defeated by Vassar

TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team fell to Vassar College by a 3-1 final tonight in ECAV Stadium. The Engineers outshot the visiting Brewers 14-9 and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, but a trio of goals—including two in the second half—lifted Vassar to the Liberty League victory.

Vassar opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, when Alejandro Martinez connected off assists from Bevan Howard and Arden Tobolski. The visitors held the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, despite six first-half shots from RPI, including multiple chances from Sam Shmukler and Matt Schlotterbeck that were turned away by Vassar goalkeeper Patrick Gale.

RPI continued to apply pressure in the second half, generating eight more shots and six corner kicks, but it was Vassar who struck next. In the 76th minute, Isaac Taegar doubled the lead off a feed from Jared Fiske and Diego Pastor-Valverde to make it 2-0.

The Engineers found life five minutes later when Joshua Jarden notched his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute. Shmukler and Owen Filler provided the assists, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

However, Vassar responded in the closing moments with a third tally in the 90th minute, as Fiske converted on another assist from Tobolski to seal the 3-1 result.

Shmukler led RPI with two shots on goal, while Schlotterbeck paced the team with four total shots. Goalkeeper Antonio Spina made a pair of saves in the effort, while Gale finished with five saves for Vassar.

The Engineers finish out the fall with a road trip to Geneva to face #21 Hobart on Saturday afternoon.
