TROY, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team picked up another Liberty League point with a 1-1 draw against visiting Union College today in ECAV Stadium. Both teams netted goals in a dramatic 57-second span midway through the second half.
After a tightly contested and scoreless first half, RPI broke through in the 58th minute when
Sam Shmukler fired home a strike to put the Engineers ahead 1-0. The play was set up by
Thomas Corcoran, who collected an assist on the scoring sequence.
Union responded almost immediately. Less than a minute later, Gavin Blake found the equalizer for the Garnet Chargers, capitalizing on a feed from Diogo Charraz.
The Engineers controlled much of the attacking pressure in the second half, outshooting Union 7-4 after the break and 8-5 overall. Shmukler led the RPI offense with three shots, including two on target and one off the pipe in the 57th minute, just seconds before his goal.
Joshua Jarden also played a key role with three shots, two of which forced saves from Union keeper Jacob Perry, who made three saves in the match.
RPI goalkeeper
Noah Churchill made two stops on the afternoon, including a critical save in the 59th minute to deny a low strike from Grant Della Rocca.
The Engineers will look ahead to trip to Bard for a 7:00 pm road meeting on Wednesday.
