ONEONTA, NY — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team came up just short in a 3-2 road defeat to Oneonta in the season finale today at All College Field.
After conceding the game's opening goal in the third minute, RPI quickly responded less than 20 seconds later when
Sophia Brown finished off a setup from
Ella Pasquarelli to even the score 1-1. The tally marked Brown's 19th goal of the season, adding to her historic offensive campaign.
Oneonta reclaimed the lead midway through the second quarter as Ali Howell found the back of the cage, giving the hosts a 2-1 edge heading into halftime.
Rensselaer leveled the match again in the third, with
Emily Dubord converting a feed from
Grace Johnson at the 36:13 mark. However, Howell's third assist of the day set up Marissa Stephan just seven minutes later for the eventual game-winner, despite sustained pressure from the Engineers in the final frame.
Brown led all players with seven shots, four on goal, while Dubord added four shots and three on target. RPI outshot Oneonta by an overwhelming 25-7 margin and held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners, but Red Dragons goalkeeper Maura Leib posted 13 saves to thwart the Engineers' comeback efforts.
Tess Garchinsky recorded three saves on the day in goal for RPI.
