Men's Hockey Powers Past Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team earned a decisive 4–1 road victory over Niagara University tonight behind a two-goal effort from Luciano Wilson.

RPI struck first at 12:50 of the opening frame when Wilson created a turnover at the offensive blue line and snapped home an unassisted goal, his first of the season, to give the Engineers a 1–0 lead.

Rensselaer carried that momentum into the second frame, limiting Niagara to only four shots through the first 10 minutes of play in the period. After the Purple Eagles tied the game at 7:11 of the middle frame, the Engineers responded less than four minutes later as Wilson collected a face-off win from Rainers Rullers, sprinted through the neutral zone, and buried his second of the night to put RPI back in front, 2–1.

Just 73 seconds later, the Engineers doubled their advantage when Jack Gorton one-timed home a pass from Jackson Kyrkostas, making it 3–1 through two periods. With Lucas Lemieux providing an assist on the play as well, the scoring sequence marked the first collegiate points for all three Engineers involved in the scoring line.

RPI added an insurance tally in the third when Cole Gordon converted from the slot off a setup from Tyler Wallace with 10 minutes remaining to seal the 4–1 victory.

In net, Nate Krawchuk stopped 19 of 20 shots to earn his fourth win of the season, while RPI outshot Niagara 33–19 and controlled possession throughout.

The two sides will face off again tomorrow at 5:00 pm in Dwyer Arena.
