Women's Basketball Hurt by Slow First Quarter Against Vassar

TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team suffered a 75-64 setback against Vassar today in Liberty League action inside ECAV Arena.

Ashlyn O'Neil and Callie Flynn scored 16 points each in the home defeat. O'Neal's performance also included five rebounds and two steals, while Flynn added four boards and three blocks to her stat line.

Tyler Hormazabal had a strong all-around performance that featured six points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and two steals. Sophie Costello logged five points, four boards, three assists, and two steals, Julia Rowe provided four rebounds and two steals, and Brooke Boyle grabbed four rebounds as well.

Vassar ended the first quarter ahead by 13 after enjoying a rally that saw the visitors score 21 of the final 29 points in the frame.

RPI came alive in the second half, as the Engineers shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the final two quarters, however the advantage never dipped below six in the second half for the Brewers.

Sierra McDermed and Tova Gelb combined for 47 points and 17 rebounds to help Vassar stay in the hunt at the top of the conference.

The Engineers will next look ahead to home matchups against Clarkson and St. Lawrence next Friday and Saturday in ECAV.
