WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team opened the spring against Benedictine University and Bethany Lutheran College today at The Spring Games in central Florida.
Four different Engineers tallied two or more hits in game one versus Benedictine.
Sydney Speanburg reached base in all four plate appearances and
Evann McDowell went 3-for-4 atop the RPI lineup. The duo also scored two runs apiece, while Speanburg knocked in two RBI.
Ryleigh Falvey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and
Callista Adorno added two hits while driving in two runs.
Adorno got the offensive going with a two-run double that plated Speanburg and McDowell in the top of the first.
The Engineers would produce another run on the base paths in the second before tacking on two more in the fourth thanks to a single by Speanburg that brought home Falvey and
Addison Shaffer.
Benedictine would have an answer for each RPI score however, as the Eagles matched the Engineers offense through four innings. Tied 5-5 in the fifth, Benedictine would plate four unearned runs to take its first lead of the afternoon.
RPI would rally for three runs in the seventh, with
Olivia Termi plating Speanburg with a sacrifice fly and
Caroline Peel singling in McDowell and
Jaylene Robles before the Eagles recorded the final out with the potential tying-run on base.
The Engineers would conclude their first day of the season with a 1-0 setback against Bethany Lutheran.
The Vikings received a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first and neither team would manage to score from there.
Adorno tallied two hits for the second straight game. Speanburg reached twice with a hit and walk, and McDowell added one hit as well in the finale.
RPI next meets Dominican University (Illinois) and Wentworth Institute of Technology tomorrow at the DiamondPlex softball complex.
