WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team swept the afternoon today at The Spring Games. RPI shut out Dominican University (Illinois) 6-0 before scoring an 11-6 victory against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Callista Adorno went 2-for-4, including an RBI double that scored
Sydney Speanburg in the bottom of the first inning of game one.
The big inning for RPI came in the third, with the Engineers batting around the order to plate four runs.
Olivia Termi and Gabby Heim provided run-scoring hits in the rally.
Termi laced a two-run single that brought home
Sarah Decker and
Evann McDowell, and Heim followed with a single that plated Termi two batters later. Maddie Brooks generated RPI's fourth run of the frame with a bases loaded walk.
Heim went 2-for-2 with a walk, as she reach base in all three trips to the plate.
The top-six in the RPI lineup Speanburg, McDowell, Adorno, Decker, Termi, and
Caroline Peel) all scored one run apiece.
Ava Market went the full 7.0 innings in the circle to earn the game-one victory for the Engineers.
Adorno and McDowell each had two hits in the game two triumph over Wentworth. McDowell gave RPI a 1-0 lead with a sac bunt RBI in the first inning of the finale, however the Leopards bats got going quickly as Wentworth establish a 6-1 advantage at the end of the second.
The five-run lead would hold until the top of the sixth when RPI received run-scoring doubles from Decker,
Addison Shaffer, and
Emma Newberry.
Decker doubled to left to score McDowell, Shaffer sent a shot to right that brought around Adorno and Decker, and Newberry's two-bagger plated
Kylie Grabler.
The Engineer offense did not stop after that, as RPI scored six more times in the seventh in the 11-6 win.
Adorno singled home McDowell, Heim drove in Decker and Adorno with a single to left, and Robles came around on a triple to center by Shaffer.
RPI will take Monday off before resuming its Spring Game schedule versus Adrian College and Moravian University on Tuesday morning.
