TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team swept today's doubleheader against Russell Sage College. The Engineers took both contests by matching scores of 5-1 on Doris Robison Field.
RPI benefited from strong pitching on the afternoon, as the Engineers pitchers surrendered only seven hits and one earned run across the 14 innings of play.
Sydney Speanburg reached base in all four at-bats of game one. Speanburg logged one hit, two walks, and was hit by a pitch to generate a team-leading two runs.
Caroline Peel tallied two hits, and Evann McDowell, Callista Adorno, and Maddy Brooks added one hit apiece.
The Engineers fell behind 1-0 after Sage's first at-bats, but would recover with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
RPI took advantage of a bases-loaded situation with run-scoring at-bats by Sarah Decker and Addison Shaffer before Peel drove in a pair of runs with a single to right.
Speanburg, McDowell, Adorno, and Decker all scored runs in the first inning outburst. Adorno gave RPI its fifth run on a RBI groundout that plated Speanburg in the bottom of the fourth.
Gaby Heim struck out seven while going the distance in the circle in the afternoon's second game. Heim allowed zero hits through Sage's first 20 batters, and allowed just three baserunners in the victory.
The Engineers were limited offensively in the early stages of the finale as well, however RPI would break through with RBI-doubles by Peel and Adorno in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
Lauren Cosselman registered a run-scoring double in the sixth before Speanburg drove in two with another double later in the same frame.
Speanburg, McDowell, and Peel all finished with two-hit efforts, while Speanburg, Cosselman, Olivia Termi, Jaylene Robles, and Emma Newberry each scored runs in game two.
RPI will next head to Oneonta for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against the Red Dragons.
