ST. MARY'S, MD - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team registered its first win of spring courtesy of a go-ahead, two-run triple by
Aidan Hicks in the top of the 10th inning this afternoon at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Matt Chotiner reached base in all five plate appearances, as the infielder went 4-for-4 with a walk.
Jon Primerano finished with three hits and walk, while Hicks had two hits and a team-high four RBI in the 8-6 win.
RPI did its scoring in bunches today, with the Engineers posting a three-spot in both the second and fourth innings prior to extra innings.
After Chotiner scored the first run of the day on a passed ball, Hicks singled up the middle to plate
Jake Contois and
Owen Burnsworth.
RPI's fourth-inning rally featured a two-run double by
Ian Oehlschlaeger and a run-scoring ground out by
Ayush Krishnappa. Oehlschlaeger drove in
Robbie Reddington and Hicks before coming around to score himself on Krishnappa's productive at-bat.
The Engineers led 6-2 after four innings, but were limited to just four hits across the next five innings to allow St. Mary's to chip away at the margin before ultimately score the tying run on a two-out, single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth.
A St. Mary's field error, a sacrifice bunt, and walk set the stage in the 10th inning for Hicks' clutch hit.
Next up, RPI will head further south to face Millsaps College on Tuesday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi.
