Softball Tallies Two Wins Today in Florida

WINTER HAVEN - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team bested North Central University (MN) and Simmons University today at The Spring Games. The Engineers won 12-3 in five innings in game one before logging a 6-3 win in the finale.

Lauren Cosselman, Olivia Termi, Callista Adorno and Evann McDowell provided multiple hits in the RPI's first victory of the day. Cosselman was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs and Termi reached base three times as well with a pair of hits and walk, one RBI, and one run. Adorno and McDowell each registered two hits, scored one run, and registered one RBI.

Sydney Speanburg scored two times, while Sarah Decker and Emma Newberry also touched home one time apiece. Maddy Brooks provided two RBI, additionally.

Adorno and Brooks knocked run-scoring singles in the first and second inning, respectively, to give RPI a 2-0 lead.

North Central got on the board in the next half inning, however the Engineers would send 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run, bottom of the third. Brooks, McDowell, Termi, and Caroline Peel all contributed RBI in the big rally.

RPI added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cosselman scored Newberry on a double, Kylie Grabler drove home Cosselman with a triple to the left-center gap, and an Adorno single plated Grabler to give the Engineers their wide margin.

Speanburg was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI, while Shaffer was 2-for-3 with two RBI to provide RPI its offensive spark in game two.

RPI trailed 2-1 going into a bottom of the fourth that saw the Engineers put up a three-spot. Shaffer doubled to left-center to score Termi, Ryleigh Falvey sent a triple to the gap that brought around Shaffer, and Falvey came home on a Speanburg base hit through the left side.

Shaffer and Gaby Heim provided more insurance for RPI in the fifth as well. Shaffer singled in Sarah Decker and Termi scored her second run of game two on a sacrifice fly by Gabby Heim.

Looking ahead, the Engineers will take the field for the final time in Florida tomorrow evening, as RPI is set to face Marian University and Aurora University beginning at 4:00 pm.
