#5 Engineers Control All Facets of Top-10 Battle with #9 Amherst

TROY, NY - The #5 nationally-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated #9 Amherst College in a meeting of two top 10 teams tonight at ECAV Stadium. RPI scored the first six goals of the game and shut out the Mammoths in the first half to capture the 15-5 victory.

Easton Morse registered a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Erik Ojert and Tyler Ruffini provided five and four points, respectively. Ojert topped all players with four assists and Ruffini had two goals and two helpers.

RPI shined in all phases in the first half, as the Engineers did not allow a goal in the first two quarters to take a 6-0 lead at the break.

Morse struck twice, while Ojert, Evan Whatley, Gavin Cousineau, and Joseph Perry netted one goal each in the opening 30 minutes, with the goalkeeper Perry scoring from 65 yards away late in the second.

Amherst scored a pair of goals early in the third, however Ruffini responded with two tallies, followed by a Sean Mullen strike to give RPI its largest lead of the game.

The Engineer's attack did not relent as the night went on, signified by a game-high six goals in the fourth quarter. Angelo Venuto, Sean Smith, Zach Swanson, and JD Townsend contributed one score apiece, and Morse found the back of the net two more times in the final frame.

Perry made 12 saves to supplement his offensive prowess. Perry stopped all seven Amherst shots in the first and second quarters.

Whatley, Swanson, and Cousineau added an assist each to cap the night with two points apiece. Cooper Roman and Nick Biava helped on goals as well.

Looking forward, the Engineers will welcome Skidmore to ECAV Stadium for Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
