SCHENECTADY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team scored with less than two minutes remaining to claim a 9-8 win at Liberty League rival Union tonight.
Lauren DeLeo finished with four goals, including the unassisted game-winner with 1:54 left in the fourth. DeLeo's go-head score marked the third time the lead was exchanged in the second half between the two squads.
The Engineers had to fight back from a big deficit early, as a hot start by the Garnet Chargers gave the hosts a 4-0 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
RPI would respond in the closing stages of the first, with DeLeo netting two tallies before Lisa Boehmer struck with eight seconds left in the frame to help RPI stay within 4-3 after one quarter.
After getting shut out in the second quarter, the Engineers put five goals in the back of the net in the third, with Graff scoring twice and Camille Stackhouse, Quinn Wollard, and DeLeo adding one strike each.
RPI was trailing 7-6 when Wollard and Stackhouse each scored in the closing 75 seconds of the third to give the Engineers an 8-7 lead going into the final stanza.
The narrow advantage held for the first 10 minutes of the fourth until Union re-tied the game and set the stage for DeLeo's winner.
Union held possession with less than a minute remaining, however Jenny Canfield made a point-blank save with 25 seconds left to preserve the one-goal margin. Canfield stopped six of the Garnet Charger's final eight shots and matched her career-high with 13 saves.
Stackhouse and Kate McFeeley each distributed two assists, while Kira Abdelsayed caused two turnovers and tallied two ground balls on the defensive end. Sydney Bandejas and Kat Cama also created key turnovers in the tight fourth quarter.
RPI will take the weekend off before welcoming Skidmore to ECAV Stadium for a 5:00 pm meeting next Wednesday.
