CANTON, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team stumbled at Liberty League foe Saint Lawrence this afternoon. The host Saints got off to strong start and did not look back to log a 9-6 win in the final day of the regular season.
After an unassisted goal by Sean Smith leveled the score at 1-1 in the first, Saint Lawrence netted six of the next seven goals to pull ahead by five early in the third quarter.
The Engineers generated some momentum in the back half of the third, with Hayden Wedemeyer, Easton Morse, and Evan Whatley providing goals in the stanza to move RPI within three with a quarter to play.
Rensselaer cut the margin to 7-5 early in the fourth thanks to a strike by Cooper Roman, however back-to-back goals by the Saints gave the hosts a comfortable lead before a late Erik Ojert tally.
Smith and Morse each finished with one goal and one assist, while Tyler Ruffini added a helper as well. Joseph Perry made 16 saves and generated a game-high three caused turnovers.
With today's result, Saint Lawrence secures the head-to-head tie-breaker and home field advantage over the Engineers in next week's Liberty League tournament. RPI will now enjoy a first round bye before traveling back to Canton for a rematch in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.
