TROY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team split the afternoon against Liberty League rival Clarkson this afternoon on Doris Robison Field. The Engineers were dealt a 8-1 defeat in game one before rebounding for a 8-0 triumph to close the day.
RPI smashed three home runs in the game two win, including two long balls in a four-run bottom of the third. Maddy Brooks left the yard with a solo shot in the second before hitting her second home run of the game one inning later. Addison Shaffer also went deep with a three-run shot in the big third inning.
The Engineers manufactured the final runs in the fifth, with Shaffer, Callista Adorno, and Sarah Decker all coming around to score for the eight-run win. Lauren Cosselman drove Decker as the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Shaffer, Brooks, and Adorno each finished with two runs, while Sydney Speanburg added a run as well.
Adorno produced the only run of the opening contest for RPI, as she doubled home Evann McDowell in the bottom of the first. The RPI advantage held for the next six innings until Clarkson put eight runs on the board in the top of the seventh.
The Engineers are set to travel to Saint Lawrence on Saturday for the final doubleheader of the regular season.
