TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team grabbed a pair of wins against visiting Cortland today on Doris Robison Field. RPI won 7-5 before coming from behind to log a 6-5 victory in eight innings.
Evann McDowell,
Addison Shaffer, and
Lauren Cosselman tallied multi-hit performances in the game one triumph. McDowell was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Shaffer and Cosselman provided two hits apiece.
Callista Adorno blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give RPI an early advantage. The Engineers added three more runs in the second, with a Cosselman single plating
Olivia Termi before McDowell brought in Cosselman and
Caroline Peel with a double.
Cortland put four runs on the board in the top of the third to tie things at 4-4, but RPI would re-take the lead with three runs in the fifth. Shaffer drove in McDowell with a single to left and
Sarah Decker scored Adorno and Shaffer following a single through the left side.
Battling darkness in the second game of the day, pinch runner
Maggie Kreis scored in the bottom of the eighth to help the Engineers secure the sweep.
RPI was in an early hole in the finale, as the Dragons manufactured four runs in their first turn at the plate. The margin favored Cortland until the Engineers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Sydney Speanburg, Adorno, and Termi all contributed run-scoring singles, while Shaffer tripled in a pair of runs in the big frame. Cosselman, Speanburg, Adorno, Shaffer, and
Ryleigh Falvey all touched home in the game-changing stanza.
The Engineers maintained their one-run lead until Cortland found the tying run in the top of the seventh. After the Engineers went down in order in the seventh, Cortland put the potential go-ahead run on third in the eighth, however
Ava Markert induced a pair of grounders to keep the score deadlocked. RPI cashed in on its designated runner in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an hard hit ball in the infield by Cosselman.
Looking forward, the Engineers are next scheduled to face Union in a Friday afternoon doubleheader in Schenectady.
